Let’s face it; we don’t like being told what to do, right? Yet, for the first few decades of our lives, we are TOLD what to learn and how to learn it. The structure and often the content are provided for us. Through this process of schooling, we learn and grow.
But once school and college end, there isn’t anyone breathing down our necks for us to CONTINUE to develop and learn. Yes, we may have bosses who might want us to get the job done better, but to truly DEVELOP to our greatest potential, that mandate is rarely, if ever, given. That’s when your drive to learn must shift from an external one to an internal one. And that’s when you get to choose your own path of development.
Recently, I was reading “The Miracle Morning” by Hal Elrod. I had EPIPHANY after EPIPHANY about better managing my life and growing myself as a leader. I had to sit the book down and give God thanks.
I work for a company that INSISTS that developing ourselves personally is a VITAL BEHAVIOR to build a strong business. I’m encouraged by the people around me to BE MY BEST. How many work environments have people around you cheering for you? Much of corporate America is actually the opposite, where your successes turn into threats and unhealthy competition is the norm.
My number 1 key to personal and professional development is to invest in educating yourself. The beauty of this is that you can DEVELOP U no matter where you are. How?
- Find a great book.
- Listen to some great audio.
- Seek out a mentor/coach.
Enroll yourself in your own DEVELOP U. You don’t need a teacher or a professor assigning you materials. If you want to improve yourself personally and professional, then make the investment by intentionally focusing on bettering yourself over time.
And a final note, if you are at all sensing that this kind of environment would be right for you, I’m ALWAYS looking for great people to join my Beachbody Coaching Team, where we virtually coach people all around the country from our own homes, and help them become healthy and live lives of freedom. (And you don’t need to be a health professional!) Hit me up with a message if you would like to hear a little more about what we do. Let’s GO!
