“But I need something more! For if I know the law but still can’t keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don’t have what it takes.I can will it, but I can’t do it. I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time.”(Romans 7:17-20 MSG)
I don’t think there is a BETTER illustration of the human condition than this. The things we WANT TO DO, we don’t end up doing. And the things that we DON’T WANT TO DO, we actually DO! It’s like the writer of this, Paul, states that his BEST INTENTIONS are sabotaged.
SO WHAT ARE WE TO DO?
The question becomes not so much one of what should we DO, but more of WHO WE TURN TO FOR HELP. The very next chapter in Romans states this:
“Those who think they can do it on their own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral musclebut never get around to exercising it in real life. Those who trust God’s action in them find that God’s Spirit is in them —living and breathing God! Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God. Anyone completely absorbed in self ignores God, ends up thinking more about self than God. That person ignores who God is and what he is doing. And God isn’t pleased at being ignored.”(Romans 8:5-8 MSG)
This is the truth, that the more we OBSESS and try to strive/control our situations, the more SELF-FOCUSED we become. We end up just sort of putting on a what I’m calling a “Halloween Costume” of sorts, which we may put on for a season, but then, when that season is over, we take it off and return to our old ways. The essence of a TRUE TRANSFORMATION is the life that allows Jesus to heal us at the deepest levels, so that our lives become focused on HONORING HIM. When this happens, the reasons WHY we do what we do become the focus. Our fitness becomes an expression of worship. Our eating becomes a way to honor God. Our thought lives become positive and up lifting.
