For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6:12 NLT)
Paul is reminding the followers of Jesus to see with DIFFERENT EYES. They were seeing the difficulties that they faced with eyes that only saw what was physical. He was telling them to look at their problems with vision that saw to the deeper issues at hand – those things beyond the physical.
I do not write this without some caution, realizing that there can be misunderstanding of these issues, so make sure that you have adequate counsel as you approach them. Some of us, need to take an honest look (with the Spirit’s guidance) at our own families and family history. There can be patterns of what the Bible calls “generational sin” that date back farther than we might imagine.
In the power of Spirit and in the name of Jesus, we can break the holds of generations of behavior (as it relates to any area of our lives, including things like sloth and gluttony). We may need to say, as the character Gandalf said in the Fellowship of the Ring, “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!” This is, indeed, no small task and should not be undertaken lightly, but it may be the very thing we need to do to help us move forward in our journeys. Feel free to ask for prayer or help.
