THE ART OF THE CHEAT MEAL
This is a critical component to success in any fitness/nutrition program. If we make our goal to try to eat between 90-95% clean, we are setting ourselves up for a DRASTICALLY HIGHER chance of succeeding. A CHEAT MEAL 1-2X per week is what we’re shooting for. This allows us to BE HUMAN and enjoy some of the foods that are out there that maybe aren’t in the health food section of stores and takes away some of the guilt we often feel.
A few guidelines that are in the pic:
1. It’s good to PLAN your cheat meal. Don’t just leave it up to chance and have a spontaneous one. This can lead to thinking that cheat meals can be used all the time. Think of this as an VACATION FUND that should only be used intentionally and every so often.
2.DON’T FEEL GUILTY about doing it. We all do these. Just embrace it and enjoy your meal and MOVE ON. Your body can handle this if you are working hard all week.
3. IT’S NOT A REWARD . Don’t think of your meal as “I’ve EARNED THIS!” That’s like someone trying to get out of debt going to the store and buying something as a “reward” for proper budgeting. Remember, you PLANNED this meal and it’s in your “food budget”. It’s not taking a BREAK from you plan. This mental framework is better for us.
And ONE BONUS:
A cheat meal assumes a pattern of NOT CHEATING for at least a while (healthy habits!). If you eat clean for one day, having a cheat meal at this point isn’t a helpful behavior because you haven’t established clean eating as a HEALTHY HABIT. Once you feel that you have established your proper portion control and clean eating, THEN scheduling a cheat meal is a perfectly legitimate practice.
Hope this helps!
